Launched in several cities around the world at simultaneous events, the LG G4 is finally here to succeed the LG G3. It's got some big shoes to fill but also some extremely tough competition with the iPhone 6 still going strong and the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9. LG is calling the G4 the 'most ambitious smartphone yet', which is focused on delivering 'comfortable elegance, a great visual experience and a human-centric user experience'.

The LG G4 went on sale on 29 April in Korea, and is in the process of a global rollout with 180 carriers. In the UK the LG G4 goes on sale today (28 May). See: Where to buy LG G4 and best LG G4 deals.
LG tends to undercut rivals and that hasn't changed with the G4. The cheapest we've found it is £489 from Clove (metal version), and you should add £30 for the leather-clad LG G4.
On 18 May LG confirmed that the G4 had already started shipping in Hong Kong with Turkey, Russia and Singapore to follow. It said "eventually including most of Europe, North America, CIS, Southeast Asia, Middle East/Africa and South/Central America".

LG G4 specification and new features: What to expect from the LG G4
As teased in LG's material prior to the launch, the LG G4 comes with a genuine leather rear cover - not metal as many predicted. This comes in various colours including an interesting yellow option but if you're not into leather then there are three ceramic models too. See all the colour options below in the full spec list.
Also on the design front, the phone has got a little heavier at 155g (149g for the G3) and LG says it's 6.3 - 9.8 mm meaning it's also thicker at the top end by almost a millimetre. The phone is wider and taller at 76 x 149.9mm.
Unlike Samsung, LG has kept the rear cover removable so you can access the battery and microSD card slot two features fans will no doubt be pleased to retain. The battery is 3000mAh so remains the same as the G3 and is still removable. To go with the expandable storage is 32GB of internal space.
As we knew beforehand via LG Display, the LG G4 uses a 5.5in screen with a Quad HD resolution (1440 x 2560). That's the same as the G3 so there's a pixel density of 538ppi but this new panel is what the firm calls an IPS Quantum Display meaning its thinner and has improvements such as brightness, colour gamut, contrast ratio and energy efficiency.
"It is the first Quad HD display to employ Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology, which combines the LCD and touch sensor into a single layer to provide better colour reproduction and touch sensitivity," said LG.
One thing which was up in the air until the launch event was the processor. At first it seemed like a natural progression to go for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor which LG had already used in the G Flex 2. There were also rumours of going with LG's own Nuclun octa-core processor but the LG G4 uses the Snapdragon 808 which the firm says is snappy yet energy-thrifty.
With the same size battery as the G3, the processor change means an extra 20 percent battery life, according to LG.
This means the LG G4 is the first phone we've seen with the Snapdragon 808 which is a six-core processor (dual-core ARM Cortex A57 and quad-core A53 with 64-bit support). It also has an Adreno 418 GPU which supports 3D gaming on 4K displays and X10 LTE which has 3x20MHz integrated LTE Advanced for download speeds of up to 450Mbps. Accompanying the chip is 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM which matches other flagship devices.
Camera resolution has jumped from 13Mp to 16Mp at the rear and LG has been touting the aperture of f/1.8 leading up to the launch and we now know it has optical image stabilisation 2.0. The front camera has also received an upgrade from 2.1Mp all the way up to 8Mp with an aperture of f/2.0.
OIS 2.0 supposedly doubles the performance by expanding the range of image stabilization from one degree to two degrees on the X- and Y-axis and adding a third axis for the first time.
A new manual mode means you can take control of settings like focus, shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation and white balance. You can even shoot in RAW format. LG says it's the first phone to have a Color Spectrum Sensor (CSS) which "improves colour accuracy by precisely reading the RGB values of the ambient light in a scene, as well as the infrared light reflected from objects."
As you'll see below in the specs list, the G4 has the kind of wireless you'd expect from a top-end phone with 11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 LE and NFC. This does mean that LG hasn't added features you can find elsewhere such as a fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor.
The LG G4 comes pre-loaded with Android 5.1 Lollipop which is the latest version and the firm's new UX 4.0 interface. This looks similar to the G3's user interface and still has existing features such as Smart Bulletin and Smart Notice but there are new features.
Quick Shot allows you to double tap the Rear Key to take a photo even with the display off. There is an improved Gallery apps and a new element called Event Pocket allows you to create a unified calendar by dragging and dropping appointments and activities from multiple calendars and social media sites.
The phone also comes pre-installed with Google Office and G4 owners will receive an additional 100GB of Google Drive storage free for two years. LG also said VW owners will be able to "view a car-friendly version of the G4 interface on the in-dash display for full integration with contacts, navigation and music on the smartphone."
