After the huge success of the LG G3, expectations of the next LG flagship smartphone are sky-high. Just like the LG G3 in 2014, the LG G4 is likely to be the most popular Android flagship smartphone of 2015, after the Samsung Galaxy S6. And if LG gets everything right, we may see the gap between the LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6 narrow further, at least in terms of sales. Lets do a quick recap of what we know about the next LG flagship so far and talk about its expected release date and pricing.
LG G4 Specs
Unlike the 2015 flagship smartphones from HTC, Samsung, and Sony, we have had very few leaks about the LG G4. The most convincing leak came out very recently and claims that LG is looking at taking on both the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy S6 with the LG G4. The report does seem to make sense, as LG made clear late last year that it was going to discontinue the G Pro line and continue with only one flagship device going forward. Since the G Pro was meant to compete with Galaxy Note line, it does make perfect sense for LG to include a stylus with the G4 and compete against not just the Galaxy S6 and other Android flagship smartphones, but also the hugely popular Samsung Galaxy Note line of phablets. LG is rumored to be including an LG G Pen with the G4 to take on the Samsung S-Pen that comes bundled with the Galaxy Note 4.
As for the other specifications of the smartphone, they are pretty much what we expect from a 2015 flagship smartphone and similar to the rumored specs of upcoming flagships from other major Android OEMs for 2015. The G4 is expected to come with a 5.3 Quad HD display and sport a similar design to the G3, with the focus on minimizing the bezels and maximizing the display area. We did expect that LG would continue to set the standard among flagship smartphones as far as bezels go, but the smaller display size does seem a bit surprising, especially as the G3 came with a 5.5 display last year. Reducing the display size on a flagship smartphone isnt a trend that we have seen in the past.
The LG G4 is rumored to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, like most other 2015 Android flagship smartphones. What isnt similar, is the rumored 4GB of RAM. If the G4 does indeed arrive with 4GB RAM, it will have an advantage over the other major flagships like the Galaxy S6, Xperia Z4, and HTC Hima, as they are rumored to launch with only 3GB RAM. Internal storage is rumored to be 32 or 64 GB, with a microSD card slot for further expansion.
As far as cameras go, the G4 is expected to arrive with a 20.7MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. You can obviously expect the laser auto-focus and the dual-tone flash to be present as well. Optical image stabilization can also be expected since the LG G3 and G2 both came with the feature.
LG G4 Release Date
From what little information is available, the LG G4 is expected to arrive at MWC this year, which is around the same time as when several other 2015 flagship smartphones are expected to launch. With an announced at MWC, you may expect to see the LG G4 go on sale in select markets by the end of March, and in most markets around the world by the end of April. The G4 should be available from all major US carriers soon after launch, as LG has enjoyed great relations with the US carriers for a long time now.
LG G4 Price
Since there is very little information available on the specs of the smartphone, you can certainly not expect to see any pricing information to be available already. However, we can try to estimate the price going by past trends. Since the G4 is expected to arrive with greatly improved hardware over the G3 and also include a stylus, we expect it to be priced slightly higher than the LG G3 at launch. That would mean a price of around $700-750 unlocked in the US market. On-contract pricing with the major US carriers could be around $200-249, depending on the carrier and also the internal storage.
What are your expectations for the LG G4?
